Getting the Most from a Dance Photographer

• Head shots – for the purposes of employee records, publicity, programming and other biographical uses, a head shot is vital. A good studio-based dance photographer will be able to take a range of head shots in black and white and colour so that you can choose the ones that you’d like to use.
• Movement shots – whether you’re a ballet dancer, a street dancer or a club dancer, it’s always good to have some shots of you as you move. These can give casting directors and other employers a really good idea of what you look like when you’re moving – you’ll still have to dance at audition or interview, but you’re more likely to get that audition if your portfolio shows good body positions and athleticism.
• Costume shots – just like a modelling or glamour photo shoot, a dance photographer will ask you to bring a range of clothing or dancewear with you to your session. Bring a variety of clothing and footwear that you would use to dance in, so that your photographs are truly representative of the work you do.
In addition to these staple photos, it’s always worth talking things through with the dance photographer you choose to work with to see if there are any other shots that would be useful to have in your portfolio. This means you can get everything done in a single session, but come away with a great range of photos to use.
